CEPS (Bruxelles, Belgium)CEPS

Description

Founded in Brussels in 1983, CEPS is one of the leading European think tanks, constantly ranked among the top ten non-US think tanks, focusing on EU affairs. Over the years, CEPS has amply demonstrated its ability to anticipate trends and to analyse policy questions well before they become topics of general discussion. CEPS has an extensive capacity to undertake both qualitative and quantitative empirical research as well as desk research with a large geographical coverage. CEPS has an extensive network of partners in Europe and beyond and is also a member of Green Growth Knowledge Platform established by the Global Green Growth Institute, the OECD, the UNEP and the World Bank.

Sustainable resource use and the circular economy transition are among the key pillars of work of the CEPS Energy, Resources and Climate Change Unit. The team has extensive expertise on resource-efficient and decarbonisation policies, green value chains, access to critical raw materials, assessment of the impacts of the circular economy transition, analysis of market and regulatory barriers for implementing circular economy business models and resource efficiency indicators. Some examples showcasing the CEPS work in this domain are the BATRAW and INSPIRES EU-funded projects. In the context of BATRAW, CEPS will assess the conditions and policy options for developing an EU industrial ecosystem of circularity applications for battery packs. As part of INSPIRES, CEPS analyses the value chain for recycled rare earth permanent magnets and prepares policy recommendations. CEPS has also built a Task Force comprised of representatives of major multinational companies in Europe as well as senior executives from NGOs and research institutes with the objective to prepare policy recommendations on the circular economy.

Role in the project

Lead the development of policy insights and recommendations. Assess possible market, structural and regulatory barriers to developing an EU supply chain for recycled rare earth permanent magnets (WP6).

ZEOS (Ljubljana, Slovenija)ZEOS

The company ZEOS, d.o.o. is a national non-profit joint scheme for the management of e-waste, i.e. waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), waste portable batteries and accumulators (WPBA) and waste grave candles (WGC).

It was established in 2005 based on the requirements of the EU Directive on the management of waste electrical and electronic equipment by manufacturers of EE equipment.

With a statute they decided that its operation would be focused on long-term efficient fulfilment of obligations arising from the EU and national legislation. The collection process involves over 50 public service providers, 1000 retailers and 500 enterprises. Annually we carry out over 10,000 takeovers of waste, and submit them for processing via contractors. Over the years, a major part of our activities involved awareness raising activities, which are key for good results in waste collection. As our resources are limited, we are very interested in projects supported by the LIFE foundation. A step forward towards raised awareness and responsiveness of end users was achieved by means of the projects LIFE+ 10/INF/SI/000139 »Slovenian WEEE campaign« and LIFE 14 GIE/SI/000176 »E-waste governance«. Currently we are conducting the third project, “Turn to e-circular LIFE18 GIE/SI/000008«. The results of our activities are reflected in every year’s increase in the quantity of collected waste, as well as in the increasingly efficient organisation of waste collection processes.

Role in the project

As part of the project, ZEOS will prepare a plan and instruction guides for optimizing the collection as well as sorting and separation of appliances containing permanent magnets (PM). For this purpose, we will perform multiple sorting analyzes by capturing different types of devices from the waste stream and determining through the course of the entire project which devices are most optimal for PM extraction.

We will also prepare a plan of elimination of  and optimization of the collection of appliances, from which it is possible to obtain PM for reuse.

eliminated devices, extracted magnets, data on the type of extracted magnets from individual devices and data on the suitability of magnets for reuse.

We will also provide our partners (with an emphasis on public utility companies and collectors) with informing and awareness-rasing campaignes on the importance of not removing electric motors, because we have an option to extract critical rare materials from them.

At Surovina we continuously develop the knowledge and processes to transform waste into raw materials in an effective and environmentally friendly way.

When we take your waste container that is not the end, but the beginning of a story in which the waste becomes the foundation for new creativity and a precious source of energy.

Depending on your company’s needs, we provide adequate, integrated and customised solutions, and cover the entire process from accepting the waste to returning secondary materials back into production or ensure they are used for energy production. All phases of this process are carried out by suitably qualified workers and experts who ensure economical and environmentally friendly processes with the help of modern technologies and equipment.

JSI (Ljubljana, Slovenia)JSI

The basic research in the Department for Nanostructured Materials at Jožef Stefan Institute focuses on inorganic materials with specific physical properties that are a consequence of their structural and chemical phenomena at the nanostructural and atomic levels.

The fields of research involve natural and manufactured ceramic materials as well as metals and intermetallic compounds.

The basis of the research is to find relationships between the physical properties of a material and its structural and chemical properties by using electron microscopy techniques to reveal phenomena on the nanoscale. Macroscopic phenomena, for example, phase transformations, phase equilibria, polytypisim, polymorphism, crystal growth, and microstructure development, are areas of particular interest. Apart from the basic research, activities are also focused on: postgraduate education, applied research, services for external partners.

DOMEL (Zelezniki, Slovenia)DOMEL

Domel is a global development supplier of electric motors, vacuum motors, blowers and components. Our long tradition and the loyalty of our employees are the foundation of our success.

Domel motors are enabling movement of more than 300 mio appliances around the world.

Role in the project

DOMEL will create a prototype electric motor with PMs made from recycled content and study its functional performance parameters (e.g., energy conversion efficiency), durability (e.g., expected life time) and running smoothness (e.g. torque ripping, noise generation). DOMEL will additionally study the feasibility of using PMs made from recycled content in production of electric motors at large scale, considering both the extent of alternations in existing production lines that are necessary to make electric motors from recycled PMs, but also alternatives in designs for electric motors to enable easier recovery and subsequent recycling.
